Category:VaishnavismLEWISTON, Maine — Maine state Sen. Roger Katz is backing away from his promise to resign if the legislature failed to pass a pension reform bill on Monday.
Katz, D-Lewiston, released a statement Monday night that he planned to resign if the Legislature failed to pass a bill that would remove the cost of living increase from future retirees.
The bill has not been passed yet, but is expected to fail.
“Last week, I told Maine people that I would resign if we failed to enact real pension reform,” Katz said in a statement released Tuesday morning. “I am not going to put the people of Maine through such an exercise.”
Katz’s promise to resign had been a campaign promise, but was not supported by Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster.
“With the looming deadline for the state to meet its constitutional obligation to pay its share of funding for retiree benefits looming, it is imperative that the Legislature send the governor a pension reform bill as soon as possible,” Webster said in a statement. “While Senator Katz has made some good points about the need for reform, his inability to even begin to address this key issue is not acceptable.”
Katz’s office did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday morning.
Katz’s office had said it would not release details of his discussions with Maine Republican Party officials.
Last week, Katz’s office said the bill in question was Senate Bill 558, an effort to cap the state’s portion of the cost of future retirees’ pensions. The bill would reduce the state’s share from the current 7.75 percent to 6.25 percent in the future.
The announcement is a reversal for Katz, who campaigned on his promise to resign if his pension reform bill didn’t pass.Feb 1, 2018
